The importance of biodiversity
Biodiversity
/ˌbʌɪə(ʊ)dʌɪˈvəːsɪti/
The variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat, a high level of which is usually considered to be important and desirable.
-Oxford Dictionary
A loss of biodiversity is one of the many impacts of climate change, so in an attempt to play a role in reversing/mitigating the impacts of climate change, I have chosen to focus on growing biodiversity at 5 Acre Farm.
Building this biodiversity aims to:
Find the balance between utilising space for growing food for humans and the local fauna
Provide more food and habitat for local fauna and the 5 Acre Farm bees, who play a crucial role in this plan
Provide a wide range of food for the local community, so that they can keep their food kilometres and packaging low (Read more why I only sell locally here)
Provide a source of food for all throughout the year
Improve the soil
Growing more plants to help in absorbing carbon emissions
Conserve varieties of plants both native and non-native for future generations
To reduce surface temperature with more plants providing more shade and heat absorption, as opposed to just grassy paddocks
Find the balance between biodiversity and managing fire risk
To improve water conservation and reduce water evaporation
Have genetic diversity in food systems to help crops resist pests and disease
SIDE NOTE ON BIODIVERSITY
Diversity for the sack of diversity is not the point, it is also important to choose the right plants as I don’t want my plant choices to cause problems, such as invading native plants.
